WIELS sits in the Forest district of Brussels, opened in 2007, in the 1930s Wielemans-Ceuppens brewery: brick and glass-brick facades keep the industrial proportions. It does three things, international contemporary exhibitions, an artist residency, and publishing and research. Three or four shows a year often give mid-career artists their first major European survey, and the residency puts studios on the top floor so visitors see work in progress rather than only finished pieces.
