MASP was founded in 1947 by Assis Chateaubriand and moved in 1968 to its site on Avenida Paulista, where Lina Bo Bardi lifted the building onto red concrete columns, leaving an open civic square beneath, and hung paintings on glass easels so visitors can walk around a work and see its back and frame. The collection runs from Italian Renaissance, Dutch and Spanish painting through to Brazilian contemporary work, and the Latin American holdings are key material for nineteenth and twentieth-century Brazilian art.
