Sharjah Art Foundation was founded in 2009 as the emirate's contemporary art organisation, spread across a cluster of traditional courtyard buildings in the old town where coral-stone walls and wind towers keep Gulf building practice intact. It runs the Sharjah Biennial, one of the longest-running in the Middle East, plus the annual March Meeting for practitioners, film, publishing and residencies. Programming runs all year and much of it is free.
