S.M.A.K., the city museum of contemporary art in Ghent, opened in 1999 in the Citadelpark next to the older MSK. Its method is to keep artists and works at the centre, setting the museum's own collection beside new work by contemporary artists from elsewhere so the two generations explain each other. The holdings start with Belgian experimental art of the 1950s and widen into conceptual work, film, installation and performance; Chambres d'Amis, which put works inside private homes, is the historical signature.
