Museum Folkwang

Museum Folkwang in Essen was founded in 1902 by Karl Ernst Osthaus in Hagen, moved to Essen in 1922, and reopened in a David Chipperfield building in 2010. The holdings span nineteenth-century painting and sculpture, classical modernism and art after 1945, with three distinctive blocks alongside: photography, posters and graphic design, and archaeology and world art. The photography collection is among the larger ones in Europe and is regularly shown on its own.
