Berlin's state museum of modern and contemporary art was founded in 1975 and moved in 2004 into a converted glass warehouse on Alte Jakobstraße. The collection runs in four strands: painting and sculpture, photography, architectural drawings, and artists' archives, all centred on art made in Berlin after 1870, with Berlin Dada and Neue Sachlichkeit as strengths and substantial material from Eastern European émigré artists. Shows often cut in through city history, setting photographs and plans next to paintings.
