Kunsthalle Basel is run by the Basler Kunstverein; its building on Steinenberg dates from 1872 and the institution was among the first in Europe to work without a permanent display, showing temporary exhibitions only. Four or five shows a year lean on contemporary practice not yet written into art history, installation, film, performance and text-based work included, and a fair number of artists get their first institutional solo here. June, when Art Basel runs a few blocks away, is the busiest stretch.
