The Power Station of Art stands on the Huangpu riverfront at Miaojing Road in a power plant built in 1897; it was converted into a museum in 2012 and is the first state-run contemporary art museum in mainland China. The plant's chimney stays in place as a landmark, ceilings run past ten metres and suit large installations and big retrospectives. It hosts the Shanghai Biennale and stages several international solo shows and survey exhibitions of Chinese contemporary art each year.
