The Phillips Collection

The Phillips Collection sits near Dupont Circle in Washington and was founded in 1921 by Duncan and Marjorie Phillips, billing itself as America's first museum of modern art. The anchor is Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party, with Bonnard, Vuillard, Cézanne and Van Gogh around it; the Rothko Room is a small chamber hung with his paintings and arranged with the artist, and your eyes need a minute to settle.
