ZKM in Karlsruhe, the Center for Art and Media, was founded in 1989 and moved in 1997 into a converted army barracks, one of the few European institutions putting art, technology and academic research under a single roof. It is museum, research institute and archive at once: the media art collection and audio-visual archives are substantial and open for research, there is a library and Medialounge, and USEUM plus open calls bring in outside projects.
