Ludwig Museum Budapest occupies part of the Palace of Arts (Művészetek Palotája) and was set up in 1991 by the Hungarian state with the German Ludwig Foundation, among the first national museums in Central Europe devoted to modern and contemporary art. The collection runs from Hungarian post-war avant-garde to international contemporary work, grounded in American Pop and German Neo-Expressionism. The museum also curates the Hungarian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and keeps a separate Biennale Archive listing past exhibitions and artists.
