The Kunstmuseum Basel calls itself the world's oldest public art collection: it traces back to 1661, when the city bought the Amerbach family collection and opened it to the public, and today holds roughly four thousand paintings and sculptures plus a very large prints and drawings department. Three buildings — main, new and contemporary — carry the old masters (the Holbein family, Cranach, Rembrandt), a Picasso holding that ranks among the largest in Europe, and twentieth-century cubism, expressionism and American abstraction through to current work.
